I am searching for a way to find a balance between the composition of a painting and the physical engagement in the handling of materials as a way of expressing my sensibility. My work divides loosely into two subject areas, the first being the study of the figure where an integral part of the practice is the constant use of a sketchpad. I make rapid, gestural studies of people, which are then used as source material for development into paintings. The intention is to capture a moment and for the paintings to maintain the same immediacy and spontaneity as the original sketch. The second subject is landscape. Here I am attempting to convey the sense of awareness I feel within a particular place. The paintings are often built up slowly in layers using a diverse range of materials and techniques to describe the texture of elements within the natural world. |
